Why you should care about Oceans

Oceans matter they produce more oxygen than anything elsewhere including the Amazons. Oceans are our prized main source of water too and water is the solution number of problems, including food and energy security, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Thus, it would be advantageous to view water as one organizing element of sustainable development and climate change resilience.

You should care because ultimately what you throw away doesn’t really go away it goes somewhere usually to the oceans. Noting that most of our foods are directly from the ocean or have an indirect affiliation with our oceans. You are what you eat and the wildlife and fish you eat will have eaten some of the pollutes you throw away or in the ocean. So you need to ensure that you try and avoid polluting oceans because of the devastating risks.

According to the UN Environmental program…
Every year, an estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic waste end up in the world’s oceans. At the same time, climate change is damaging coral reefs and other key
ecosystems; overfishing is threatening the stability of fish stocks; nutrient pollution is contributing to the creation of dead zones; and nearly 80 per cent of the world’s wastewater is discharged without treatment.

One of the detrimental repercussions of ocean pollution is that the melting sea ice is changing the feeding and migration patterns of whales that populate the ocean’s coldest regions. Not forgetting that whales play a major role on the ecosystem. If they go extinct that means the cycle breaks and there would be more problems. So then you should question what happens when whales change their normal patterns or if they go extinct. Well first thing is the whales are at the top of the food chain so the ecosystem will be heavily affected. Whales pay a role in carbon capture and help regulate climates planet. Besides if there were no Whales the krill population they feed on would multiply aggressively causing an imbalance in the ecosystem and everything is affected. In turn the krill populations would deplete phytoplankton and algae which they feed on.

Secondly the natural disasters of flooding, heatwaves, floods and whether are all regulated by the oceans. It soaks up the heat and transfer water from the equator to the poles and cold waters from the poles to the tropics. If this regulation doesn’t happen other places could be inhabitable to put it simply. Thirdly the oceans is the number one food source of protein which is obtained from fish. Algae and sea plants are also beneficial so we cannot do without them.Fourthly many creatures live in the sea and they serve a purpose otherwise they would not exist. It’s also a source of income for the various jobs that are curated by the oceans. Oceans have therapeutic purposes and will you need them for vacation! So in a nutshell oceans provides nutrition, medicines, and mineral and renewable energy resources. It supports jobs in fishing, seafood, leisure and science. Our ocean is the original “super-highway,” that links economies together and transports goods and people all around the globe. So you should care simply because your life depends on it therefore you should stop using plastics! Use renewable things so we do not destroy our earth and everybody should have a compost at their own backyard and last but least save water so we can reduce the depleting water levels!
