Spotlighting Local Heroes on World Environment Day 2025

Location: University of Port Harcourt Premises
Event: World Environment Day
Date: June 5, 2025
In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, our team visited the University of Port Harcourt to engage with some of the often-overlooked heroes in the fight against plastic pollution—frontline plastic waste pickers.
These individuals play a crucial role in keeping our communities clean, yet many juggle this task alongside other jobs just to make ends meet. On June 5th, we had the privilege of speaking with four passionate individuals who shared their stories, challenges, and motivations:
- Mrs. Chidera Harrison
- Mrs. Success Gospel Okechukwu
- Mr. ThankGod Chidi
- Ms. Gladys Katie
Their experiences gave us deeper insight into the realities of grassroots environmental work—work that is often invisible but incredibly vital. Despite limited resources, their dedication to making a positive impact in their communities is inspiring.
To show our appreciation, we presented each of them with souvenirs—a small token of encouragement for their continuous efforts in tackling plastic waste and promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
Their stories are a reminder that true environmental change starts with everyday actions. By recognizing and supporting local waste pickers, we not only uplift their work but also strengthen our collective responsibility toward a sustainable future.
Let’s keep raising awareness, supporting grassroots efforts, and doing our part to protect the planet—every day.
